“Starting as a Help Desk agent is probably the most accessible path towards the IT industry and depending on your personality, it can be either Disneyland or living hell.”
IT Life Club
As in any other industry or job, it comes with some PROs and CONs so let’s walkthrough some of these aspects and by the end of this article you should determine if the Help Desk agent is the right one for you.
If you want to make an impact and help others in need, this is the best place because working as a Help Desk implies resolving customer incidents all day long. Put yourself in the customer shoes for a second and imagine that you’re encountering a scenario which gives you serious headaches. What would do you do?
Call a friend?! Stop here for a second and replace friend with Help – Desk, that will be you of course, you are the one who should know it all or even better know the person who can help out.
When I’m saying “Know it all”, I am actually referring to knowing where to search because there might be hundreds of topics and one surely won’t know the resolution steps for all so to conclude all you have to do is run a search and follow the steps, as simple as that.
Working in the IT industry won’t require any Science degree so don’t be discouraged if you lack an IT Diploma because at the end of the day, especially for the entry level jobs, the desire to learn and some very basic skills that you can pick up from YouTube beats experience.
Age is just a number; it doesn’t matter as long as you are ready for the multitasking challenge and be able to log a ticket while talking with a customer over the phone. There’s simply room for everyone to join the industry, it’s all about you and the amount of work you’re ready to put in.
So far the Help Desk agent job fits like a glove, right? There’s one more thing that you should possess in your skillset and that is soft skills, after all you’re working with humans and therefore strong communication should be one of your top qualities.
It somehow interrelates with the desire of helping others, if making an impact is what you’re seeking, finding a way to convey the information shouldn’t be a problem at all.
Ok, all good but I don’t want to be dragged into the 9-17 routine and spend that much time in the office.
Put this thought aside, nowadays most of the job openings include remote working meaning that you’ll be able to work from everywhere in the world as long your job is done.
Did I mention, it pays well? It does, indeed this fast growing industry is one of the most well paid across all sectors and don’t take my word for granted just have a look yourself on Glassdoor and let the numbers surprise you.
Where to start though? Luckily, there are recorded courses or live sessions that will get you at 99% of being ready for a Help Desk Interview. All you have to do is to pay attention, build a LinkedIn profile and fill in that 1% by practicing at home and show up at the interview.
To conclude, landing a job in the IT world is easier than you’d imagine, with the right guidance and appropriate mindset, we’ll be colleagues in no time.
